It is always exciting to me as the summer begins and we are in full swing for Camp POSTCARD, knowing that there are kids out there getting excited and nervous about leaving home for a week with a bunch of law enforcement professionals. I think the officers are just as excited to attend because they get to see old friends and because they know the difference they are making with these kids.

Founded seven years ago by Volunteers of America, the MCRRC program in Belfast is well known and widely supported. This time of year, the Center is practically synonymous with "The Garden Project." Our Program partners include the Maine Department of Corrections, Maine Board of Corrections, Waldo County Sheriff's Office, and the Restorative Justice Project.

The Maine Coastal Regional Reentry Center recently graduated 10 men, the first class of Maine students from the STRIVE Northern New England program. The graduates, residents of the MCRRC, stood in slacks and ties and proudly accepted their certificates as their names were called. CEO June Koegel was at the event to congratulate them.

Different than the MCRRC, our Northern Maine facility is a Federal reentry center. Behaviors and boundaries are proscribed by the Bureau of Prisons (BOP). The residents are serving out the last part of their sentences, usually a matter of months. Volunteers of America contracts with the Bureau of Prisons to run the center to provide security and case management.

It was an incredible day when Julie Dufour got the phone from Kathryn Bernier of Hammond Street Senior Center. Volunteers of America's Miller Square was among six greater Bangor organizations to receive $10,000.00 for stepping in to fill the void created when the Hammond Street Senior Center sadly closed its doors.

Volunteer and help out a new friend... Yelp Helpers recently converged on Peaks Island to build raised beds at the Fay Garman House for growing vegetables and flowers. This is an annual event and they had such a great time, they've signed up for next May already. Also in May was the United Way Day of Caring at Bayview Heights in Portland and Paul Hazelton Houses in Saco.
